I always start by choosing the preset first, e.g.: empty shell > Remote> Healing (R) -JW then move on to programs tab and add chosen program, then to control tab, tick box to over write your chosen generator. You don't have to use settings as it's all done for you in the software.
You only start by selecting a Shell (Empty) Preset if you want to create your own custom preset using programs under the Programs tab.
On the other hand, if you select one of the ready-made presets - such as those in the Heal, Miscellaneous, Cancer, M&L etc folders - then you do not need the shell as all the settings are already in place.
