The only way that you choose between Contact, Remote, or Plasma is basically what you connect to the XM Generator! If I understood you correctly it sounds like your clicking on the square on bottom right which is the Com Port that your Generator is connected to and you don't click on the square until you have chosen your program to run first. Read up on the Remotes because one is used for Healing and the other for Killing but if that is too confusing then just run the White Remote to begin with!
