1. PC: Spooky2 was originally designed for use with Windows XP, but it also runs on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. USB 2.0 or greater is required for frequency generator connectivity.
Mac/Linux: Regrettably, there are no native Mac or Linux versions. We recommend you pick up a pre-owned Windows PC and dedicate it to Spooky2. These can usually be bought for a very modest price. Since many of you will wish to try experiments with long run times, this may be a good idea anyway. Alternatively, you can use BootCamp to create a Windows partition, or purchase virtualization software. You can download our helpful " Spooky2 in Linux or Mac" PDF guide here under "Useful Documents."
2. Getting Spooky2 to work well on a Mac is hard. I have VM Ware Fusion, and while it works, sometimes the VM can't find the devices. If you use Boot camp to put a native Windows partition on the hard drive, this will work better than using Virtual Machine emulation software.
The GX can run offline, but it needs a Windows computer to set up the programs, and you lose a lot of functionality that is in the online version. For example, you can't simply load the Terrain (R) - BY preset into a GX offline and have it work. Offline can't do sweeps, and can't do independent Out 2, can't do chained presets.
Also, there is a 200 frequency limit on the programs you can run.
3. I'm a dedicated Mac user from way back, but in 2016 we elected to buy a cheap Windows laptop to run Spooky2. We use it for nothing else. It's by far the most convenient option.
4. I was delighted to find an older laptop with Windows 7 on it in a box of electronics in my storage. Works well so far and this way I can dedicate this laptop to Spooky and keep it in my living room and can continue with the main computer in my office as normal. Might be able to find a suitable computer/laptop/tablet in a pawn shop too, as another option. All the best to you and those you're helping)

5. I pulled out an old laptop that had been sitting in the closet for at least 8 years. It has Windows7. It works like a charm!
6. This is just an FYI so your computer doesn’t turn off during the day. Find the .exe program called “caffeine” and set it to 24 hours and your computer will stay on.
7. I got mine for Free.
Most people will be happy to get rid of old stuff laying around
I have an old Dell ... PC, not a laptop.
Windows 7- 8 - 9 -10
A couple of USB ports.
