Actually a sine wave generates a single frequency whereas a square wave, or any non sine wave generates multiple frequencies. The total energy in the single sine frequency or sum of frequencies in non sine remains the same. If you need or want multiple frequencies at the same time, then you have to use a non sine wave signal. There is nothing other than frequencies so the actual effect depends on the frequencies and how they are repeated. E.g. pulsing or constant. If you wanted to destroy something that had a single resonant frequency you could do it with a sine wave.
