The reason you should select a Shell (Empty) Preset in which to "insert" your chosen programs is that you want the correct settings in place for each modality (remote, contact, plasma, etc).
The empty shells mean that we don't have to visit the Settings tab and fiddle with things that perhaps many don't really understand. If you just go straight from Programs to Control without first choosing a Shell (Empty) Preset, the generator will run the last settings that were applied. That may be appropriate in some instances, but certainly not in others.
So play safe: choose an appropriate Shell (Empty) Preset first.
