1. The optimum is 6 inches. You could run at night and pause during the day.
2. If you are unable to use the near field (6 inches), within 5 feet is best. Efficacy can still be had at up to 10 feet away, and lesser results at 15 feet, etc... It can still devitalize at 35 feet away, and the signal goes out 200 feet.
However, every time you double the distance from the plasma, the power falls to a quarter of what it was.
