1. That sounds like a fun experiment. I would be more inclined to out that in the sample digitizer and then scan that (or maybe hunt and kill on that) and then run the frequencies through contact or remote.
2. If it were me, I would put a very thin bit into Sample digitizer and run hunt and kill, or directly run a scan and find the hit frequencies.
