Would holding with one hand the contact and the other at a different body part like waist or leg affect the results when not symmetrically hold it?

Electricity will take the shortest path of resistance. Therefore, where you place the contact rods will determine what areas of the body are most directly affected. Hand to hand, generally will cover the upper body the best, but leave the lower body with less direct application -- relying more on signal propagation. If you select right hand and left foot, you increase the coverage of the entire body.

So in your example, the area that lies between the hand and the waist would have the strongest application of the program. TENS pads are generally used in place of the contact pads when doing targeted application of electrical signals as they are easier to keep in place.
