Electrical current needs two poles to flow. If you connect yourself to only one pole, you're not closing the circuit, and it won't work.
The only exception is when you're grounded. In this case, current will flow even if you're connected to one pole only, but may be dangerous to receive any kind of voltage while grounded. I'd never would myself.
