1. We typically do not recommend using the generators without the software as many people develop frequency fatigue when the same frequency is used for an extended period of time.
I have one older UDB generator that will not connect to the software that I use in this fashion at times, but generally can't run the same frequency for more than an hour before it starts to hurt and I have to vary the frequency or just shut it off completely.
I generally only use it now when I will be sitting next to it and can manually change the frequency every 5 to 15 minutes.
2. XM will work in standalone mode. Just make sure the settings (offset, amplitude) are the same as used in laser preset. You can download Spooky2–XM Generator User Manual from here - http://www.spooky2.com/downloadsPage/index.html
Connect the laser directly to the OUT1 of XM. Don't use a Boost circuit.
