1. I would say yes. I've put a few thin nail clippings in before with success.
2. Yes. The better the sample the better the result. I also believe that as you hit the DNA sample with the frequencies it degrades the DNA, so the more you have the better, but many here claim that the nails last for many months. I prefer to refresh mine every 2 weeks.
